Patients and families report critical medical shortages and delays in Mexico and Peru
Families in Mexico and Peru are raising urgent alarms regarding medical neglect and the inability to access essential healthcare services.
In Veracruz, Mexico, a single mother has denounced the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) for failing to provide specialized studies and medication for her 24-year-old daughter. The patient, who suffers from lupus, epilepsy, and Cushing syndrome, has been hospitalized for six months. The mother reports that requests for specialized testing and transfers have been repeatedly denied due to budget constraints and a lack of resources for travel expenses.
In Piura, Peru, a mother has appealed to the president of EsSalud, Zulema Tomás, regarding her 14-year-old son who has been waiting two and a half years for surgery to treat an aneurysm. During a hospital visit, other patients also reported delays in medical appointments, shortages of medication, and the use of outdated equipment. While EsSalud leadership announced plans to improve medicine supplies and surgical capacity, no specific timeline has been provided for the adolescent's procedure.
