Pato O'Ward Sets Fastest Lap in Indianapolis 500 Third‑Day Practice
Mexican IndyCar driver Pato O'Ward posted the quickest lap of the third practice session for the Indianapolis 500, recording a speed of 227.308 mph on the 2.5‑mile oval. Four‑time winner Helio Castroneves was close behind at 226.977 mph, while drivers Marcus Armstrong, Felix Rosenqvist and Alexander Rossi also broke 226 mph. The drivers used the six‑hour session to test qualifying setups ahead of turbo‑boosted runs on Friday and the four‑lap qualifying runs scheduled for Saturday.
The day enjoyed ideal weather with calm winds and comfortable temperatures, according to Castroneves. In the non‑towing category, Takuma Sato posted the top speed of 223.828 mph, followed by Team Penske teammates Scott McLaughlin and David Malukas. Rossi, the 2016 Indy winner, completed a busy day after his crew swapped his engine less than 24 hours earlier. The practice times set the stage for the upcoming qualifying weekend and the May 24 race.
