Patras commemorates 82nd anniversary of liberation from Nazi occupation

The city of Patras held various ceremonies to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of its liberation from Nazi occupation on October 4, 1944. The three-day event, organized by the Municipality of Patras, included a memorial service at the Holy Church of Evangelistria and a ceremony at the monument for the fallen resistance fighters.

During the commemorations, Mayor Kostas Peletidis delivered a speech emphasizing the historical significance of the liberation and the role of the organized people in driving social change. Political groups also participated; the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) honored the actions of EAM and ELAS, while the Greek Left Coalition (EL. A. S.) marked its first organized presence in the region following the formation of its local bodies.

Historical accounts of the 1944 liberation detail the combat between ELAS and British forces against German troops, noting that the city was freed after intense fighting that resulted in the deaths of several Greek citizens and resistance members.
