Patras councilor calls for urgent mosquito control measures
Antonis Charokopos, a municipal councilor for the ‘Patra, Spoudia kai Pali’ faction, has raised concerns regarding public health and mosquito control in Patras. During a municipal accountability session, he highlighted the increased mosquito presence observed throughout the summer, which has caused significant public distress.
Charokopos emphasized the need for systematic prevention and monitoring, particularly in areas with standing water, such as streams, storm drains, and green spaces that facilitate mosquito breeding. He noted that the urgency of this issue is heightened following the recorded case of West Nile virus in the Patras municipality in 2024. The councilor is calling for a comprehensive municipal program that includes mapping breeding sites, population monitoring, and targeted interventions to protect residents.
