Patras mayor pushes demolition of old port building for seafront redevelopment

Mayor Kostas Peletidis of Patras wrote to Culture Minister Lina Mendoni urging the removal of the former port authority building, which the municipality says is unsafe and threatens public safety. The building has been vacant since the 2008 earthquake, and the Central Council for Modern Monuments is set to decide its status as a protected monument. The mayor argues that any protection would block the city’s planned seafront redevelopment between the Saint Nicholas mole and Ichthyskala, a project included in the West Greece Sustainable Urban Development programme. The municipal council approved a pre‑study for the redevelopment, and final design and tender documents are expected by November 2026. An inspection on 24 July 2026 confirmed the building’s risk, reinforcing the mayor’s call for demolition before the tender process begins.
