Patras Police Station attack highlights staffing shortages in Achaia

An attack at the Patras Police Station on the morning of October 25, 2026, has prompted the Association of Police Employees of Achaia to issue a formal complaint regarding critical staffing shortages. During the incident, a local man with severe psychiatric issues attacked night shift personnel using a hammer. While two officers were struck, they did not sustain serious injuries, and the assailant was apprehended by support units and criminal investigation officers.

The Association alleges that the building's security was compromised due to personnel being reassigned to other duties at the time of the attack. Specifically, one officer was escorting a psychiatric patient, and another had been ordered to conduct inspections at health-related businesses. The Association noted that a similar incident recently occurred at the Aigio Police Station, suggesting a systemic risk.

Further concerns regarding police welfare in the region include significant personnel deficits. Reports indicate that 72 officers have left or are leaving the Achaia services, with only 11 new placements expected. Additionally, the Association has criticized low wages, insufficient equipment, and the high cost of living, noting that recent reinforcements of 11 officers are insufficient to cover the needs of Greece's third-largest city.
