Patreon expands features to support creator growth and discovery
Digital micromecenazgo platforms like Patreon and Substack are seeing sustained growth as creators seek alternatives to traditional social media algorithms. Patreon has expanded from approximately 98,000 creators before the pandemic to over 340,000 today, managing more than 18 million monthly paid subscriptions.
Creators, such as illustrator Alicia Aradilla, report that these platforms provide more stable recurring income compared to the fluctuating engagement of social media networks. To support this growth and improve visibility for smaller creators, Patreon has launched its largest update to date, introducing 30 new or revised features.
Key updates include ‘Clips’, which allows creators to share short video fragments on external platforms like TikTok and Instagram, and a redesigned recommendation algorithm. Unlike the previous system that favored established creators, the new algorithm prioritizes individual posts based on theme, style, and narrative approach, aiming to give smaller creators an equal opportunity for discovery.
