Patriarch Kirill ties Russian nuclear bomb to Saint Seraphim of Sarov
Patriarch Kirill of Moscow delivered a sermon at the Holy Trinity Monastery in Diwejewo, linking the development of Russia’s atomic bomb to the prayers of Saint Seraphim of Sarov. He described the bomb as a manifestation of “God’s mercy” that saved Russia from destruction and praised President Vladimir Putin, calling him a “Orthodox leader.” Kirill said the scientists who built the weapon worked under the saint’s protection and that the nuclear arsenal was a divine shield against enemies.
Finnish Orthodox Metropolitan Elia sharply rebuked Kirill’s interpretation, calling it a political agenda that misuses the church. Elia emphasized that “there are no Orthodox atomic weapons” and condemned the association of Saint Seraphim with mass‑destruction weapons. The Finnish church, part of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, has broken ties with the Moscow Patriarchate over the Ukraine war, and Elia’s statement reinforces that split.
The controversy highlights the intersection of religion, Russian nuclear policy, and intra‑Orthodox tensions across Russia, Finland and Poland.
