Patriarch Pavle: Remembering the life of the Serbian Orthodox Church leader

Today marks the birth anniversary of Patriarch Pavle (born Gojko Stojčević), who served as the 44th head of the Serbian Orthodox Church from 1990 to 2009. Born in Kućanci in 1914, he was widely revered by the public as a ‘living saint’ due to his humility, wisdom, and care for others.

His life was marked by significant personal challenges, including the early loss of his parents. A notable moment in his spiritual journey occurred in 1944 at Vujan Monastery near Čačak. While suffering from tuberculosis, doctors predicted he had only months to live, but he credited his recovery to prayer at the monastery. As a gesture of gratitude, he hand-carved a wooden cross that remains in the monastery's treasury today.

Following his recovery, he was tonsured as a monk in 1948. During his 19-year tenure as Patriarch, he oversaw several institutional developments, including the establishment of the Academy of the Serbian Orthodox Church for Art and Conservation and the reintegration of religious education into public schools.
