Patriarchate of Antioch expresses concern for Middle East Christians
The 16th Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Antioch concluded in Balamand on October 24, 2026, focusing on the precarious future of Christian communities in the Middle East. Under the presidency of Patriarch John X, the Synod addressed the challenges facing believers in Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Iraq, and Jordan.
Participants highlighted that these communities face not only security threats but also profound political and economic instability, the consequences of war, and the struggle to maintain decent living conditions. Significant concern was raised regarding the ongoing migration of families and young professionals, declining birth rates, and social shifts that threaten the long-term presence of Christians in the region.
In discussions regarding Lebanon, the Synod emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims. Leaders called for the state to maintain exclusive control over weapons and to ensure an independent, impartial justice system to foster national unity and political stability.
