Patriarchate of Jerusalem defends management of Saint Gerasimos Monastery
The Patriarchate of Jerusalem has addressed rumors regarding reforms and pressure at the Saint Gerasimos Monastery (Deir Hajla) on the Jordan River. The Patriarchate clarified that monks who have departed the monastery did so voluntarily and at their own request.
Following the death of Archimandrite Chrysostomos on September 6, a three-member committee was appointed to oversee the monastery's affairs. The Patriarchate emphasized that the management of monastic matters, including the movement of monks and financial oversight, falls exclusively under its jurisdiction, stating that external interference will not be accepted.
Reports from supporters of the monastery indicate that monks have begun moving to other locations following verbal instructions from the Patriarchate, though some expressed concern over the lack of written documentation regarding these transfers. Supporters in Nicosia recently submitted a memorandum to the Exarch of the Holy Sepulchre, requesting transparency, peace, and respect for the wishes of the late Archimandrite Chrysostomos.
