Latin American judicial reforms and leadership changes

Several Latin American nations are undergoing significant judicial and institutional transitions. In the Dominican Republic, the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) is advancing the selection process for Supreme Court of Justice vacancies. The CNM recently rejected a single objection to the preselected candidate list and is scheduled to publish the call for public hearings on September 30.

In Guatemala, Jenny Noemí Alvarado Tení has been unanimously elected President of the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) for the 2026-2027 term. She is set to assume office on October 13, managing the judiciary during the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

Venezuela is engaged in political dialogue aimed at institutional restructuring. The National Assembly has appointed an 11-member preliminary commission to begin the process of designating 32 new Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) magistrates, with a target for completion in November. Additionally, discussions are underway to establish a new National Electoral Council (CNE) by December 2026 to ensure electoral transparency. Related developments include the re-enabling of over 60 restricted information platforms.

In Colombia, President Abelardo de la Espriella has appointed Supreme Court Justice Cristina Lombana as the new Secretary of Transparency of the Presidency. Lombana will assume the role on October 8, focusing on strengthening anti-corruption strategies and protecting public resources.
