Renowned Chilean documentary filmmaker Patricio Guzmán has passed away at the age of 85 in Paris, France. According to the Chilean Academy of Cinema and family sources, Guzmán died following a cardiorespiratory arrest after facing health complications for several years.

Guzmán was a monumental figure in Latin American cinema, widely recognized for his work documenting Chile’s political and social history. His most iconic achievement is the documentary trilogy ‘La batalla de Chile’ (The Battle of Chile), which recorded the turbulent period surrounding the government of Salvador Allende and the subsequent 1973 military coup led by Augusto Pinochet. Due to the dictatorship, Guzmán was detained at the Santiago National Stadium before eventually going into exile.

Throughout a career spanning over five decades, he produced more than 20 films, including acclaimed works such as ‘Nostalgia de la luz’, ‘El botón de nácar’, and ‘La cordillera de los sueños’. His contributions earned him numerous prestigious international honors, including the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, a Goya Award, and the Golden Eye at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2023, he was honored with the Chilean National Prize for Representation and Audiovisual Arts.
