Patrick Bruel faces sexual assault allegations and tour cancellation
French singer Patrick Bruel faces serious legal proceedings following accusations from over thirty women involving rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment. Following his placement in provisional detention in June, Bruel has been subject to legal constraints, including a 500,000 euro bail and a prohibition on contacting the alleged victims. He has recently announced the cancellation of his upcoming tour.
The case has sparked significant debate among public figures. Singer Zazie expressed support for the victims, noting that while she has not personally witnessed such behavior, the volume of testimonies suggests a serious issue, though she emphasized the importance of letting the justice system take its course.
In contrast, actress Mimie Mathy defended Bruel, suggesting he is a “charmer” who may have been harassed more often than he harassed others. Her comments drew sharp criticism from former minister Marlène Schiappa, who labeled Mathy’s rhetoric as problematic and reminiscent of outdated justifications for sexual violence.
