Patrick Bruel confronts theater protests, tour cancellations as multiple sexual assault allegations mount

Patrick Bruel, a 67‑year‑old French singer and actor, is facing four formal rape complaints in France and a criminal investigation for sexual assault in Belgium. He denies all accusations made by dozens of women, including former TV presenter Flavie Flament, who alleges a 1991 rape when she was 16.

The controversy has spilled into the cultural sphere. Activists from the feminist collective Nous Toutes disrupted Bruel’s performance of the play “Deuxième partie” at Paris’s Théâtre Édouard VII, chanting “Bruel ! Violeur !” and were removed by security. The protests have prompted several concert cancellations, notably three shows in Quebec and a scheduled appearance at Switzerland’s Bellarena Indoor Festival, while Sony Music has paused promotional activities for the artist.

Bruel’s partner, Clémence, has publicly supported him while keeping a low profile. Other public figures, such as singer Christophe Willem, have called for Bruel to withdraw voluntarily from his tour. Despite the backlash, Bruel intends to begin his scheduled tour on 16 June at Paris’s Cirque d’Hiver.
