Patrick Hardison undergoes complex face transplant

Patrick Hardison, a firefighter who sustained severe burns during a house fire in New York in September 2001, has undergone a complex face transplant at NYU Langone Health. The accident, which occurred just days before the September 11 attacks, left Hardison with extensive injuries to his face, neck, and upper body, including the loss of his eyelids, ears, and lips.

Following more than 70 previous surgeries that failed to restore a normal quality of life, a medical team led by reconstructive surgeon Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez performed the transplant. The procedure involved approximately 100 doctors and utilized advanced techniques, including 3D-printed cutting tools and custom metal plates and screws tailored to the patient's anatomy. The surgery successfully transplanted the donor's ears, ear canals, and various bone structures, including the chin and nose.
