Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce fight to exit 1587 Prime trademark lawsuit

Kansas City Chiefs players Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are attempting to distance themselves from a federal trademark infringement lawsuit involving their upscale restaurant, 1587 Prime. The legal dispute involves 1587 Sneakers, a company claiming prior rights to the “1587” name, which is a combination of the two athletes' jersey numbers.

Mahomes and Kelce have moved to dismiss the case, arguing they lack direct ownership interest or operational control over the limited liability company that manages the steakhouse. They contend they are not responsible for the day-to-day business or the alleged infringement.

However, 1587 Sneakers has pushed back in court filings, accusing the players of attempting to portray themselves as “two distant celebrities that are mere promotional ‘pretty faces’ of the alleged infringing enterprise.” The company argues that the players were central to the restaurant's brand rollout and marketing alongside hospitality group Noble 33, suggesting a level of involvement beyond mere endorsement.
