Patrick Mahomes expected to start for Chiefs in season opener

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is expected to start the season opener against the Denver Broncos on Monday night, marking a significant comeback following a major knee injury. Nine months after suffering tears to both his ACL and LCL during a game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Mahomes has completed a full rehabilitation process.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid stated that Mahomes has a “pretty good chance” of starting, noting that the quarterback has participated in all offseason workouts and training camp practices. While Mahomes was held out of all preseason games as a precaution, Reid indicated that he has looked normal in practice despite wearing a brace.

The return comes after a difficult 6-11 season for the Chiefs. In addition to Mahomes' status, the team is managing injuries on the offensive line, with left tackle Josh Simmons potentially sidelined, which may lead to rookie Kahlil Benson starting in his place. Mahomes and teammate Travis Kelce are also scheduled for a featured interview with ESPN ahead of the matchup.
