Patrick Mahomes unlikely to play in Chiefs' preseason due to knee recovery

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has indicated that star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is unlikely to participate in the upcoming preseason, including the opener against the Los Angeles Rams on August 15. The cautious approach is intended to protect Mahomes as he continues his recovery from surgery to repair torn ACL and LCL ligaments in his left knee, an injury sustained last December.

While Mahomes has been participating in training camp practices and has been cleared for full participation, Reid noted that "percentages lean" against using him in exhibition games. The decision also aims to provide more repetitions for the team's depth, including veteran Justin Fields and rookie Garrett Nussmeier.

Mahomes expressed his willingness to follow the coaching staff's decision, stating, "I'm for whatever coach says." He noted that while he is preparing as if he is playing, the priority remains being fully ready for the regular season opener against the Denver Broncos on September 14.
