Cameroon’s Yaoundé first‑instance tribunal sentenced 30‑year‑old Patrick Mengue to six months’ imprisonment on 27 July 2026 for “outrage” against President Paul Biya. The court also imposed a fine of 28 000 FCFA, court costs of 15 000 FCFA and ordered the confiscation of his mobile phone.

Mengue had been held in pre‑trial detention since 24 April 2026, meaning he has already served most of the term and is expected to be released in late October 2026. The case is part of a broader crackdown, with about twenty similar outrage prosecutions recorded in Cameroon this year.

Opposition figure Hiram Iyodi denounced the judgment as “not honoring democracy,” while lawyers Christian Bomo Ntimbane and Batam Nkolong argued the ruling shows abuse of power and a lack of judicial independence.
