Patrick Soon-Shiong and BioNTech face scrutiny over mRNA cancer concerns

Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, a transplant surgeon and biotech entrepreneur, has raised concerns regarding a perceived increase in aggressive cancer cases, specifically noting instances of colon and pancreatic cancer in children and adolescents. Soon-Shiong, who owns the Los Angeles Times and leads ImmunityBio, stated he is investigating the underlying causes of these rising incidences.

In a related development, BioNTech has reportedly discontinued its Phase 2 clinical trial for the cancer therapy candidate BNT122. The decision follows observations that patients receiving the modified RNA (modRNA) treatment experienced higher mortality rates compared to those who did not receive the medication.

Critics and some medical professionals, including British oncologist Angus Dalgleish, have also voiced concerns regarding the long-term effects of mRNA boosters, citing instances of melanoma relapse in previously stable patients.
