Patrick Vieira appointed as Senegal national team head coach

Patrick Vieira Senegal national team Lions of Teranga Édouard Mendy retirement AFCON qualifiers

Patrick Vieira is officially taking command of the Senegal national football team, signing a four-year contract that extends through the 2030 World Cup. The former Arsenal midfielder, born in Dakar, will be formally presented to the press in Dakar on September 18. His tenure begins during a period of transition for the Lions of Teranga, following the team's exit from the 2026 World Cup.

This leadership change coincides with the international retirement of veteran goalkeeper Édouard Mendy. After eight years and 59 caps, Mendy cited a desire to focus on family, physical recovery from past injuries, and educational and entrepreneurial projects in Senegal, such as the Yakar school. To fill the void, Vieira is expected to call up Monza goalkeeper Ngagne Demba Thiam.

Vieira is also assembling a technical staff, with reports indicating that Kader Mangane may join as Team Manager and Hachim Ali Mbae as a video analyst. The new coach faces an immediate schedule, including Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers against Mozambique and Ethiopia, followed by a friendly against the Comoros in Marseille.
