Patrik Laine linked to Islanders and Senators as free agent

Finnish forward Patrik Laine remains an unrestricted free agent after his stint with the Montreal Canadiens. Rumors connect him to the New York Islanders, whose contract buy‑out window opens on August 3 and runs for 48 hours, giving the club a chance to clear salary cap space for a potential signing. Speculation also links Laine to the Ottawa Senators, whose general manager Steve Staios has expressed interest in adding a pure goal‑scorer on a low‑risk, one‑year deal worth $1‑2 million with performance bonuses.

Laine, who posted 20 goals in 52 games for Montreal in the 2025‑26 season, has struggled with injuries but is still regarded for his shooting and power‑play ability. The Islanders could also consider buying out contracts of Ondrej Palatin or Pierre Engvall to make room, while the Senators aim to boost their offensive depth as they chase a higher playoff position.
