Patrik Laine remains unsigned as NHL teams weigh options

Finnish forward Patrik Laine remains a free agent as the 2026-27 NHL season begins. While teams like the Detroit Red Wings and Los Angeles Kings have shown interest, several factors are delaying potential signings.

Reports indicate the Detroit Red Wings have considered Laine but must first resolve contract situations involving Dylan Larkin and Simon Edvinsson. The Calgary Flames have also been linked to Laine, though the organization currently prefers to prioritize playing time for its younger players.

Laine’s availability is complicated by recent injury history and his previous time in the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. Some analysts suggest teams are waiting until after the summer to confirm his health and motivation to remain in the NHL. If an NHL deal does not materialize, Laine may consider playing in Europe, specifically in Switzerland or Finland.
