Patriorigen app sparks controversy over Moroccan product detection

Patriorigen, a scanner application created by content creator David Santos, has gained significant traction in Spain, reaching approximately 400,000 users. The app allows consumers to scan barcodes to identify the origin of food and goods, specifically focusing on detecting products from Morocco to encourage the consumption of local Spanish products.

The platform uses open databases like Open Food Facts and GS1 prefixes to verify manufacturing locations. However, the tool has faced challenges with products that are repackaged in Spain despite having Moroccan raw materials. The developers have stated they are working on improvements to identify these instances.

The app's rise has sparked intense social media debate and hostility. A Moroccan user, identified on Instagram and TikTok as @imadhakimi2ha, released a video directed at Santos, warning him of “a big problem” and demanding the removal of the application and specific terminology, accusing the platform of disrespecting Moroccan immigrants.
