Patriot Games youth sports event faces demographic criticism

CNN host Audie Cornish has criticized the inaugural Patriot Games, a youth sports event sponsored by Freedom 250 and attended by President Donald Trump. Citing a CNN analysis, Cornish stated that participants featured on the organization’s social media appeared to be “overwhelmingly White” and many attended private Christian schools.

Critics raised questions regarding the selection process, noting that contestants were chosen via video essays rather than qualifying athletic events, and some participants reportedly represented states in which they do not reside. Some social media commentators have characterized the event as a “MAGA Olympics.”

A White House spokesperson defended the event, describing the Patriot Games as a “resounding success” that provided athletes with opportunities to earn life-changing scholarships. The spokesperson dismissed the criticisms of the event’s demographics.
