Patriots for Europe demand EU response to Hungarian government actions
Members of the Patriots for Europe group, including representatives from Hungary, France, Austria, Italy, Spain, and the Czech Republic, have submitted a joint written question to the European Commission regarding the government of Péter Magyar.
The group is demanding answers on how long the Commission will remain silent regarding measures they describe as undermining fundamental democratic rights and neutralizing political opposition. Specifically, they cite a retroactive constitutional amendment that has disqualified more than half of opposition parliamentary representatives from running in elections.
Additional concerns raised include the seizure of assets belonging to the largest opposition party by the prosecution and statements by Prime Minister Péter Magyar regarding the potential arrest of opposition politicians. The group argues that using retroactive legislation to limit electoral participation and utilizing the judiciary as a political tool violates Articles 2 and 19 of the Treaty on European Union and Article 47 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights.
