Patti Smith criticizes US leadership while receiving Princess of Asturias Award
American artist Patti Smith has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the current United States administration, describing the leadership as “deplorable” during a press conference in Oviedo, Spain. While receiving the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts, Smith stated she feels “ashamed” of the current government and noted that she finds nothing positive to say about the administration.
Smith, who identifies as a global citizen rather than a conservative or Democrat, urged citizens to exercise their power through voting in the upcoming November elections. She emphasized that while artists play a role, a larger collective of activists and citizens is required to effect change both in the United States and globally.
In addition to her political commentary, Smith discussed her career and evolving relationship with religion. The artist is currently conducting a tour in Spain, including performances in Madrid, Gijón, and Oviedo, as she approaches her 80th birthday.
