Princesa de Asturias Awards honor Patti Smith and Studio Ghibli

The 46th Princesa de Asturias Awards ceremony was held at the Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo, Spain, presided over by King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, and Infanta Sofía.

American singer-songwriter and writer Patti Smith received the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts. During the ceremony, Smith delivered a speech emphasizing the importance of culture and the role of artists in providing hope and stability to new generations. She concluded her address with an unannounced a cappella performance of her song ‘Wing’.

Studio Ghibli was awarded the Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities. Kenichi Yoda, the president of the Japanese animation studio, accepted the award accompanied by a Totoro plush. The recognition highlights the studio's global impact and its ability to use animation as a vehicle for empathy and imagination.

Princess Leonor also addressed the audience, calling for optimism in the face of social skepticism, inequality, and uncertainty affecting young people.
