Pau Cubarsí contract extension to utilize new FIFA regulations

FC Barcelona is preparing a contract extension for defender Pau Cubarsí through 2031, with a salary expected to match Pedri. However, the club will not register the new agreement until after the winter transfer market closes.

This timing is strategic due to upcoming changes to FIFA's Article 17 regarding player status and transfers. The reform, which follows a European Court of Justice ruling, will take effect on January 1, 2027. Under the new rules, any unilateral contract termination compensation must be calculated based on several factors, including the remaining value of the contract, unpaid salary, the cost of a replacement, and structural damage to the club.

Cubarsí is expected to be the first academy graduate from La Masia to sign under these new regulations. Other players, including Marc Bernal and Gerard Martín, are also awaiting similar renewal processes. Notably, Lamine Yamal's existing contract, signed in May 2025, will not be subject to these specific new proportionality controls.
