Paul Biya expected to return to Cameroon following health speculation

Speculation regarding the health and whereabouts of Cameroonian President Paul Biya has intensified following his prolonged absence from the country. The 93-year-old leader has been in Switzerland since June 7, a trip initially described by authorities as a ‘brief private stay.’

Government spokesperson René Emmanuel Sadi addressed concerns by stating that the President ‘is alive’ in Geneva and will return to Cameroon soon. Despite these assurances, the opposition has raised questions about the country’s governance, suggesting the state is operating on ‘autopilot’ while Biya remains abroad. Because Cameroon lacks a vice presidency to assume duties during extended absences, daily executive management has fallen to high-ranking officials and presidential relatives.

Recent developments include a reorganization of the military leadership affecting four of the country's five regions. Additionally, reports suggest Biya may return to Yaoundé within the next 48 hours, potentially ending months of uncertainty regarding his status.
