Paul Finebaum's provocative SEC remarks draw criticism

Sports analyst Paul Finebaum sparked controversy with two separate comments about SEC football. In December 2022, during coverage of the Peach Bowl, Finebaum mocked Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer, questioning whether the coach was "AI generated" because of his unemotional response to a media question. He suggested DeBoer needed "proof of life" and likened his demeanor to that of a hostage negotiator.

Later, in August 2026, Finebaum predicted that the Texas Longhorns would dethrone the Georgia Bulldogs as SEC champion, stating it would be "Steve Sarkisian's year" and implying that Georgia coach Kirby Smart would struggle to retain the title. Both remarks were made on televised sports programs and attracted attention for their blunt tone.
