Paul Greengrass films ‘The Uprising’ about the Peasants’ Revolt

Director Paul Greengrass is filming ‘The Uprising’, a historical drama centered on the English Peasants’ Revolt of 1381. Starring Andrew Garfield, the film explores the tensions between the ruling elite and the powerless in the years following the Black Death.

One central character, a nun named Alyce, is a fictional composite designed to represent the women who participated in the rebellion. While not based on a specific historical figure, her character is intended to reflect the followers of the real-life priest and revolutionary leader John Ball.

Greengrass utilizes a ‘vérité’ filmmaking style to provide a sense of immediacy to the historical events. Production has taken place at locations including Penzing Studios in Munich.
