Paul King and Simon Farnaby's Unmade Star Wars Droid Film

After the success of Paddington 2, director Paul King and writer Simon Farnaby pitched a Star Wars movie that would have centered on a droid, with no appearance by the franchise’s main characters. Lucasfilm declined the proposal, saying the concept did not fit a Star Wars film, and the project never entered pre‑production. Farnaby later told Variety, “They were like, ‘We really need it to be a Star Wars movie,’ which is probably why it didn’t get turned into a Star Wars movie! … But we never really nailed it.” The duo is now considering reworking the idea into a non‑Star Wars project. King and Farnaby subsequently directed the hit film Wonka and are developing a Labubu movie for Sony. Their abandoned droid pitch joins a long list of Star Wars projects that were announced but never materialised.
