Paul Mackenzie convicted of murdering 191 in Shakahola cult massacre

A Kenyan court has convicted Paul Nthenge Mackenzie and 28 associates of murdering 191 people, including 190 children, in connection with the Shakahola Forest massacre. The Mombasa High Court, presided over by Lady Justice Diana Kavedza Mochache, ruled that the deaths resulted from an organized system within the Good News International Church.

Prosecutors established that the group operated as a cult, using religious teachings to coerce followers into extreme fasting to “meet Jesus” before an expected apocalypse. The court heard evidence that the deaths followed a structured hierarchy, with children being targeted first, followed by women and then men. The doctrine also prohibited formal education and modern medicine, labeling them as evil.

While the current convictions cover 191 specific murder counts, the broader Shakahola tragedy involved the discovery of over 400 bodies in shallow graves. Sentencing for Mackenzie and his co-accused is scheduled for November 6.
