Paul McCartney claims to remember being born
Paul McCartney, the 84-year-old Beatles musician, recently claimed to have memories of his own birth. During an interview on the ‘Good Hang’ podcast, McCartney described recalling white tiles, chrome instruments, and the sound of forceps “clanging” at Walton Hospital in Liverpool.
However, memory researchers state that such recollections are almost certainly impossible due to a phenomenon known as “infantile amnesia.” Experts explain that the human brain is not equipped to store autobiographical memories from birth, with most adults unable to recall events occurring before the age of three.
Psychologist Vanessa LoBue of Rutgers University noted that any perceived memories from before age two or three may actually be constructed from stories told by others. While infants can recognize faces and learn information, scientists believe the rapidly developing brain effectively wipes the slate clean, preventing the conscious retrieval of earliest experiences.
