Paul Scherrer Institute researchers develop rapid airborne radioactivity detection

Researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), in collaboration with the University of Michigan, have developed a new computational method to identify and locate radioactive materials from helicopters with unprecedented speed and precision. Published in Nature Communications, the technique uses a specialized Bayesian inference framework to analyze gamma-ray signatures.

During field tests in Switzerland, the method successfully identified radioactive sources from approximately 100 feet in the air, pinpointing locations within two meters of accuracy. The system can also estimate radiation activity levels with less than four percent deviation from laboratory measurements. Unlike traditional methods that may take hours or days to process data, this approach can analyze measurements in seconds.

This advancement is intended to assist emergency responders during nuclear accidents or terrorist incidents by providing rapid assessments for evacuations and protective measures. The technology also has applications for the routine monitoring of nuclear facilities and environmental assessments.
