Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes experienced a concerning outing on Tuesday, being removed from the game after just five innings and 65 pitches during a 2-0 loss to the Miami Marlins. While Skenes allowed only two runs (one earned) and struck out four, observers noted a significant drop in his fastball velocity. His heater topped out at 96.5 mph, a notable decrease from his previous seasons where he frequently reached 98-99 mph.

Pirates manager Don Kelly stated the early exit was not injury-related, noting that players in August are often not at 100 percent. Skenes expressed understanding of the decision, stating, “If I were the manager, I’d probably do it, too.” However, the pitcher's recent performance has been inconsistent, with a 5.20 ERA over his last 15 starts.
