Paul Smith reflects on fashion career and new autobiography
British fashion designer Sir Paul Smith is reflecting on his career and global success ahead of the release of his new autobiography, ‘Threads: My Life in Style’. Smith, whose brand operates in 50 countries, credits humor and personality for his early success in Japan, where he has been working since 1982. He noted that using rubber chickens to make people laugh helped overcome language barriers during his early years in the country.
Smith also discussed his signature colorful stripe designs, which first appeared in his 1992 spring collection and have remained a staple of his brand for over 30 years. Additionally, the designer spoke about his dyslexia, noting that while it affects his reading, he manages public speaking by memorizing his presentations. He emphasized the importance of good manners and personal connection in maintaining business longevity, often writing thank-you postcards to fans who send him gifts.
