Paul Tonko criticizes FanDuel VIP programs and pushes for SAFE Bet Act

US Representative Paul Tonko has criticized FanDuel regarding its VIP programs for ‘high-value bettors,’ arguing that these invite-only structures may encourage problematic gambling behavior. Tonko, alongside Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representative Valerie Foushee, recently sought detailed answers from the company concerning its internal practices and responsible gaming models.

The scrutiny follows a recent incident involving MLB star Bryce Harper and a user experiencing gambling issues. Tonko expressed dissatisfaction with FanDuel’s responses to official inquiries, accusing the company of using a flawed responsible gaming model to avoid accountability and shift responsibility onto consumers. He contended that sportsbooks have shown an inability or unwillingness to protect customers from betting risks.

In response to these concerns, Tonko is advocating for the passage of the SAFE Bet Act. Introduced two years ago, this legislation aims to implement stricter federal regulations for online sports betting operators to better protect consumers from an ‘out-of-control industry.’
