Paul W. Downs reacts to Andy Cohen confrontation over ‘Hacks’ joke

Paul W. Downs, co-creator of the HBO Max comedy ‘Hacks’, has reacted to being confronted by Andy Cohen on live television regarding a joke made about the host. During an appearance on Cohen’s Bravo talk show on August 11, Cohen addressed a line from the series written by Downs, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky. The joke, delivered by Jean Smart’s character Deborah Vance, referenced Cohen in the context of reality show narratives.

Speaking at the 28th Television Academy Hall of Fame ceremony on August 13, Downs expressed surprise at the confrontation, stating, “I can’t believe he went there.” He jokingly added that his lawyers advised him against speaking further because they are “taking action.”

Downs noted that while the show utilizes scripted lines, the cast frequently engages in improvisation. He described Cohen as a “good sport” and explained that the writers only name-check individuals they are fond of and believe possess a sense of humor.
