Paula Fletcher announces retirement from Toronto City Council

Toronto-Danforth Councillor Paula Fletcher has announced her retirement from politics, withdrawing her name from the upcoming municipal election race. Fletcher, who has served on the Toronto City Council for 23 years, had initially registered to run for another term just days prior to her decision.

Fletcher stated that her decision to retire came after a period of reflection while paddleboarding on Lake Ontario. She clarified that her health is fine but noted that she does not have sufficient time to pursue further major initiatives, such as the Don River and waterfront revitalization projects.

Fletcher will remain in her role as councillor until the fall to continue addressing constituent issues. She has not yet identified a potential successor for her ward, noting that she previously succeeded Jack Layton in the position.
