Paulien Cornelisse, Dutch writer and comedian, dies at 50

Dutch writer, comedian, and television presenter Paulien Cornelisse has died at the age of 50. She passed away on Wednesday at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital in Amsterdam due to complications from cancer.

Cornelisse was a prominent figure in Dutch culture, known for her sharp observations on language and human behavior. She achieved widespread fame with her 2009 bestseller, ‘Taal is zeg maar echt mijn ding’, which explored the quirks of the Dutch language. Her career spanned literature, cabaret, and television, including roles as a columnist for NRC and De Volkskrant, and as a jury member on the popular quiz show ‘De slimste mens’.

She had been open about her health struggles, having been diagnosed with cancer in 2021 and again in 2024. Despite her illness, she remained active in her professional life, recently appearing on television where she spoke candidly about the physical effects of chemotherapy. Her death has drawn tributes from colleagues, publishers, and the Dutch literary community, who described her as a unique and beloved voice.
