Paulo Eduardo Gomes, Niterói political leader, dies at 75

Paulo Eduardo Gomes, a prominent political figure and former city councilor in Niterói, has died at the age of 75. He had been hospitalized for cancer treatment.

Known as PEG, Gomes was a significant leader in the Brazilian left, having participated in the founding of the Workers' Party (PT) in Rio de Janeiro and later helping to establish the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL) in Niterói. His political career included six terms as a city councilor and two campaigns for the mayoralty of Niterói.

Before his political career, Gomes was a telecommunications engineer graduated from the Federal Fluminense University (UFF). He held a significant role in the labor movement, serving three terms as president of the Embratel Employees Association. Political leaders, including federal deputies Chico Alencar, Marcelo Freixo, and Glauber Braga, have recognized his legacy of defending workers' rights and public services.
