Portugal proposes EU customs duty reduction to 10%

Portuguese Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel has expressed support for reducing the European Union's customs duties from the current 25% to 10%. Speaking during a parliamentary hearing regarding the 2027 State Budget, Rangel noted that such a reduction could serve as a way to find own resources while reasonably remunerating the work member states perform regarding customs revenues.

Rangel acknowledged that this measure could have a significant impact on certain countries, particularly those with major ports. The proposal comes amid negotiations for the next Multiannual Financial Framework (2028–2034).

Additionally, Rangel highlighted the 2027 budget for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is projected to exceed 500 million euros for the first time, reaching 512 million euros. He described this increase as a “political signal” that distinguishes the current administration from previous governance.
