Paulo Ricardo Garcia graduates in Physical Education at age 63

Paulo Ricardo Garcia, 63, has graduated with a degree in Physical Education in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The graduation ceremony took place on September 6 at the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Fiergs).

Garcia’s academic achievement follows a lifetime of overcoming barriers. As a child, he was denied enrollment at a school due to a paralysis that affected his speech and movement. At the time, school officials reportedly refused his admission, claiming he would “scare” other children or draw too much attention in the classroom.

Despite being excluded from formal schooling, Garcia learned to read at home by observing his sister, retired teacher Carmen Beatriz Garcia, while she taught her nephews. He remained dedicated to learning throughout his life and has already begun working as a gym instructor.
