Paulo Sérgio Nogueira authorized to pursue distance learning in prison

Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has authorized Paulo Sérgio Nogueira de Oliveira, the former Minister of Defense under Jair Bolsonaro, to enroll in a distance learning (EAD) course while serving his prison sentence.

Nogueira, a reserve general, was sentenced to 19 years in prison for crimes including attempted coup d'état, armed criminal organization, and the violent attempt to abolish the Democratic Rule of Law following the 2022 elections. He is currently held at the Comando Militar do Planalto in Brasília.

The authorized course, “Leadership and People Management in the Health Area,” is offered by Faculdade Anhanguera. The decision follows a request from the defense, citing the Penal Execution Law, which allows inmates to reduce their sentences through study or work. Moraes noted that the institution is officially accredited to provide distance education to incarcerated individuals in the Distrito Federal.
