Paulo Strehlke Sets Record, Wins Third Gold for Mexico at 2026 Central American Games

Mexican swimmer Paulo Strehlke, a 20‑year‑old from Morelos, won the 1,500‑metre freestyle at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo 2026, touching the wall in 15:03.87. The time broke Ricardo Vargas’ previous competition record of 15:18.33 set in Barranquilla and also established a new Mexican record. Strehlke’s victory secured a third gold medal of the Games, following earlier wins in the 10‑km and 3‑km open‑water events.

Venezuelan Ronaldo Zambrano earned silver in 15:45.32 and compatriot Raúl Briceño took bronze in 15:55.51. After the race Strehlke said, “Tenía mucho tiempo entrenando bastante bien y mejor que nunca… Solo estaba esperando que pasara porque sabía que podía suceder y hoy se logró.” His performances, which include a 12th‑place finish in the 10‑km open‑water event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, position him as a leading contender for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic swimming program.
