Pavel Landovský: Remembering the life of the Czech actor and dissident

Czech actor and dissident Pavel Landovský would have celebrated his 90th birthday on September 11. A signatory of Charter 77, Landovský was a prominent figure in Czechoslovak cinema and theater.

Throughout his career, he appeared in legendary films such as ‘Černí baroni’, ‘Svatba jako řemen’, ‘Markéta Lazarová’, and ‘Vratné lahve’. He was a key member of the Činoherní klub in Prague during its most famous era and performed at various major theaters, including the National Theatre and Divadlo Na zábradlí.

His son, Jakub Landovský, remembers him as a fearless role model. Jakub noted that while his father lived a bohemian lifestyle and was sometimes viewed as a rebel, he left a lasting positive impact on those who knew him. The actor's life included periods of exile in Austria and close associations with figures such as Václav Havel and Miloš Forman.
