Pavia medical meeting discusses Chronic Myeloid Leukemia advancements
At the Collegio Ghislieri in Pavia, the association AIL organized a meeting between patients and doctors to discuss Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML). Medical experts highlighted that CML, once considered incurable, now offers life expectancy comparable to the general population due to advancements in targeted therapies.
Jacqueline Ferrari from IRCCS San Matteo explained that the introduction of tyrosine kinase inhibitors, starting with Imatinib in 2001 and followed by Nilotinib, Dasatinib, Ponatinib, and the recent Asciminib, allows for personalized treatment. These drugs enable doctors to select therapies that best suit a patient's lifestyle and life expectancy.
Paolo Bernasconi, President of AIL Pavia, emphasized the importance of local support for families. He noted that certain hematological treatments, such as bone marrow transplants, require patients to remain in Pavia for extended periods for frequent check-ups, making economic and logistical support from AIL vital for disadvantaged patients.
